A friendly heads-up for students planning their next academic step.
I want to write letters that are specific, credible, and genuinely useful. The simple rule below helps me make sure I know your work well enough to recommend you meaningfully.
If A is true, or both B and C are true, you meet the baseline criteria for requesting a letter. Meeting the criteria does not automatically guarantee a letter; I’ll still need to be able to provide an honest and sufficiently detailed assessment.
I directly supervised your thesis and am familiar with your research, independence, and contributions.
Please be ready to share the course and semester, along with your grade or class-rank evidence if available.
For example, you completed a research project, capstone, or other substantial academic work with me, or we worked together closely enough for me to assess your abilities.
A practical note: please ask well in advance (ideally 3–4 weeks), send your CV, transcript, the opportunity/program details, deadline, and a few points about your goals. I may decline if I can’t write a strong, honest letter or if the timeline is too short.
